3 “Foolish” Decorating Mistakes You Want to Avoid

By April 1, 2020 No Comments

Can we all agree that everyday this year has felt like April Fools Day? I cannot believe how destructive the Coronavirus has been to this world. I truly hope and pray that we get through this sooner than later.  I am so sorry to anyone who has lost a friend or family member due to this unfortunate pandemic. Coronavirus has forced many of us to work from home. It has also brought a lot of downtime to our lives. In honor of April Fools Day, I decided to share some of the “foolish” mistakes that I’ve seen many people make when decorating their home. During the quarantine, I challenge you to make sure you are not making the decorating mistakes that I am about to cover.

One of the most common mistakes people make when decorating their home is hanging their curtains too low. Believe it or not, properly hanging your curtains will make your space look 100x better! If your curtains are hung too low, it will make your space look smaller. Hanging your curtains at a proper height will:

  • Give the illusion of a taller room
  • Allow more sunlight into the space (if you know me, you know I’m obbbbssessed with sunlight!)
  • Make the room look like it’s professionally designed

Take a look at the model I created below. Both windows are the exact same height, but the window to the right makes the room look much taller. To achieve this look, it is important to buy the correct size rod and curtain panels. Measuring your window PRIOR to buying your rod and curtain panels is the first step to properly hanging your curtains.

  • Buy a rod that can extend at least 3-5 inches past the outer edges of your window
  • Curtain height should be at least 6 inches above the window.
  • Make sure the curtain gracefully reaches the floor (my BIGGEST pet peeve is when the curtain is too high off the floor)

Have you ever found a furniture piece that you just LOVE!?!  You purchase it, it gets delivered to your house, and it’s…too…big. Its vital that before you make the purchase, you consider the size of the space. For example, you don’t want to buy bulky, heavy furniture for a small space. It will only make the space look even smaller and crowded. It also works vice versa. If you buy small petite furniture for a large room, it will make the space look empty. Making this mistake will convince you to believe that you need to buy more furniture to fill the space.  Before you head to the furniture store, be sure to measure the space first. Measuring will help you choose a furniture piece that fits best. Take your time. Don’t be afraid take a day or two to think about it before making a final decision.

Ex. This sectional is definitely too large for this room.

Buying a new area rug can be a very stressful journey. You have to consider so many things. What size should I get? What color should I get? How long will this rug last? It creates so many questions and so much anxiety. Selecting the correct rug size and placement will pull the whole room together. To save you the headache, take a look at the helpful guide below.

It’s important not to rush the decorating process. You don’t want to spend unnecessary money on furniture and decor that doesn’t work for your space. Take your time. Your home is meant to be your sanctuary, a place where you feel most comfortable and overall love. Avoiding these “foolish” mistake will definitely make the decorating process easier.

I hope you all stay safe and healthy!
